Teaching Biology ROCKS!!!

For one of my classes (practicum), I need to spend 30 hours in a high school biology class. This week was my first week in the classroom. Tuesday I observed and was mostly silent, but today my cooperating teacher, Mr. Myrup, changed all of that.

Today was grasshopper dissection day, and Mr. Myrup encouraged me to interact with the students and help them out with their dissections. How could I say no? Dissections are awesome, so of course I went at it. The really amazing part of it all was interacting with the students. The dynamics in the classroom were fantastic, and I found myself racing around the classroom to help students who called out "Miss Ferguson!", to encourage students to work hard, and to answer any questions. It was pretty fantastic. I loved explaining to the students that we have an tympanum (ear drum) just like grasshoppers do. I loved seeing them grossed out as I picked up a grasshopper with my bare hands and then encouraged them to do the same. I loved the look on their faces when they finally got it. And I love biology.

So, not that I was doubting before, but I have officially decided that teaching biology ROCKS!!! It is so exciting to me and gives me such enthusiasm and energy. I love it. And although I will need to get used to being called "Miss Ferguson," I am going to love it. Biology is amazing, and I am so happy that I get to teach it to fantastic students for the rest of my life. WAHOO!!!

You go, Miss Ferguson! It's important to record these happy, postive interactions so that if ever you have a rough day teaching Biology, you can go back and remind yourself why you're doing what you're doing. YOU LOVE BIOLOGY. And that's awesome. This world could use some more Biological Enthusiasts.

Speaking of which, three deer came to our backyard again yesterday. You really missed out! I wished I had a digi cam so that I could have taken a picture for you...so you could at least experience them in some small way. We have some random bug and an ugly spider waiting in our freezer for you.

Have a BLAST on your Entomology fieldtrip! BIOLOGY ROCKS!!! (Nature's a part of that, Hay!) :)

I know how you feel about being called Miss. I get called Ma'am. I'm like, "stop! I'm only 22!" lol

I'm glad you are glad that you are majoring in what you are majoring in. That must be a good feeling. I am also so happy that you have truly caught the vision of why you are doing what you are doing. I love you Hay!!!!
