My Interesting Friday

Once upon a time I was going to be an elementary school teacher. But I am ahead of myself. Today was an interesting day; I wish I could say it was fantastic, but alas, I cannot. There were parts of it that were, but for the most part, it was interesting.

It really all started last night. I was driving to my apartment around 5:30pm, and I was at the University Ave. and 800 north intersection. The light was red, and my car was stopped. I checked my mirrors (like all good drivers do), and saw a most atrocious sight. The car behind me was approaching; a guy was in the passenger seat and a girl at the wheel, and they were literally grabbing each other from their seats. Thankfully she stopped, and they began to full on kiss, tongues and all. I was totally grossed out, but a trance-like state passed over me, and I watched them totally be disgusting in bright daylight. Look, folks, if you're going to make-out, don't do it in broad daylight at a busy intersection. The light turned green, and I started driving, and finally that car did too. But as I checked my mirrors again, they were kissing each other while driving. Again, I was appalled, and this time I couldn't look anymore. Totally gross.

I really have no idea what that has to do with my interesting day, but in some stream-of-consciousness way it does, so there you go.

This afternoon I went on an entomology field trip to Hobble Creek Canyon. Ten minutes before we were to leave, a horrific microburst came into town. Would this storm, you ponder, thwart the efforts of the entomologists? Of course not! We drove to the canyon in a down-pour, and thankfully it let up while we were collecting. Somehow when I collect bugs, my girly-prissy part turns off and I turn into outdoorswoman Haylee. The best part about the trip was that I caught a dragonfly! Finalement! I was very excited, and the little fly is in my freezer now. I aspirated some smaller things, caught a red beetle, and found out that when we go on the camping trip next weekend, there is a possibility of there being no toilets. We have to carry our TP out in ziplock bags. That was not so much fantastic, but the bug part really was.

I then headed to work. Because I am student teaching next semester, I cannot TA the SEM class anymore, so I am training Liesel to be my replacement (but really, who could replace me?). Today was her day to teach labs, and as I sat and listened to her teach, I wanted to jump in and say things a lot. Then I realized again that I am a control freak. When I am not in control of the teaching, I go batty. I feel like she isn't giving information in the correct way or allowing the students to work enough on the microscopes. That was interesting.

Tonight I went to a workshop called "Project WILD." As I went into the classroom, I realized I was surrounded by elementary education majors. Ugh. I am so unlike these girls, I do not know how I could ever have become one. Praise the day I chose biology as a field and not el ed. This workshop was mainly for teachers to learn how they could integrate nature into the classroom, and I felt like putting my two bits in about every five seconds. How could they live without knowing about carrying capacity?!? How could they stand not knowing about the facial disks in owls?!? How could they stand prancing around and being all cute-sy when there is BIOLOGY all around them?!? I am super glad I am a biologist. We even dissected an owl pellet, and I got my hands in there and got dirty. The girls all around me were very prissy about it, but by the time I was done, my table had almost a full mouse skeleton assembled. It was fantastic! Owl pellets ROCK! (How many people have you heard say that?)

In conclusion, today was interesting. Making-out, a dragonfly, control freak, and owl pellets. Pretty interesting. Pretty great. Maybe my day wasn't so non-fantastic after all.

Don't you know that it is much safer to kiss while moving? Especially in a vehicle that weighs at least 10 times as much as you do and could easily crush anyone who happened to not notice that you were making a meal of your seat parter. Maybe they didn't notice that the car was started and going....it's possible right?

As for the control freak...I totally understand. We have to train the new TA's and turn our lab over to them every once in a while...I hate that!!! At least you know that you are in good company (Al and I are also control freaks). Takes one to know one.

I personally love the fact that you lose your prissiness to be a bugger...that was pretty good don't you think?

Love ya!!

Me, a control freak?! What on earth would put such a notion into your sweet head, Mrs. Jo-nanna? I am one of the least controlling people in the world...hold on, I just heard a noise in the kitchen that doesn't sound just right...

I'm back now. Anna was simply putting the insulated cookware in the wrong spot under the stove...you know, ABOVE the muffin tins which must be exactly three inches from the side of the drawer instead of BELOW them and pushed slightly toward the back so that the drawer closes with perfect ease.
I'm just glad you love owl pellets so much. You and Mandy really should get together. She gets to touch and dissect pooh all of the time. Quite frankly, I think you people are nuts, but as long as you wash your hands with scalding water and antibacterial soap for at least one minute, it's cool. Oh, hold up again, alright?

Sorry, someone just left our house and didn't put the stool back in its exact place, you know, it was a little off-centered and turned so that the foot rest wasn't completely flush to the counter. But hey, it's cool that you two are control freaks and all. Perhaps you should teach me lessons on what that's like...

;)

My girly side never goes away, Haylee. Especially not for owl pellets.
